Our
Innovative
Approach
“New technology is reshaping labor markets faster than most institutions can respond. At GitLab Foundation, we have made a deliberate bet. Moving with speed, anchoring on results and living our values of transparency and collaboration will drive the highest return on investment.”
- Ellie Bertani, President and CEO
Philanthropy's potential is realized when outcomes become the ultimate measure of success. We navigate toward a NorthStar that guides our work and holds us accountable to data and results.
Our North Star is intentionally bold.
GitLab Foundation operates with a bold North Star guiding our work: For every $1 we invest, we aim to generate at least $100 in lifetime earnings.
Our Estimated Impact and Results dashboards allow us to track progress and make agile adjustments to how we approach our investment strategy, ensuring the strongest results. This approach also offers transparency and clarity to our partners, peer funders and the public.

Mozilla Foundation needed a unified way to measure how its work was moving people. GitLab Foundation's Impact Advisory team embedded with Mozilla's leadership over eight months to build the measurement backbone their strategy required. That gave Mozilla confidence in what it was building, and data to back it up.

Investing at the Intersection of AI and Economic Mobility
How GitLab Foundation’s
AI for Economic Opportunity Fund
shows the power of partnership at scale
AI is reshaping labor markets faster than systems meant to support workers can respond. In FY26, GitLab Foundation's AI for Economic Opportunity Fund selected 16 organizations from 800+ applications — investing alongside OpenAI, Ballmer Group, and the Annie E. Casey Foundation in solutions ranging from eviction prevention to climate-smart farming.

Our Grantees
Raising lifetime earnings through access to opportunities
From Nairobi to the Tech Industry
The AkiraChix codeHive program equips underserved young women across sub-Saharan Africa with tech skills to compete economically. Alumni earn up to six times the regional average income, and a recent study found codeHive graduates earn 3.3 times more than their peers.
Our funded project is estimated to cost $971 per person to double lifetime earnings, driving increased annual incomes of $5,088 to 12 people.
Building Careers in Home Care, One Connection at a Time
Carina connects home care workers directly to clients who need them. By doing so, it reduces the mismatched placements, unpaid gaps and scheduling inefficiencies that erode earnings for independent providers who are mostly women and disproportionately women of color.
Our funded project is estimated to provide 107X ROI, driving increased annual incomes of $6,440.0 for 500 people.
AI Giving Immigrants a Chance at Economic Opportunity
Mobile Pathways uses mobile technology and AI to help immigrants navigate their legal journeys, giving nonprofits and attorneys real-time data to act faster on their clients' behalf, so a missed status update doesn't cost someone their shot at work authorization.
Our funded project is estimated to provide 910X ROI, driving increased annual incomes of $3,328 for 8,250 people.
A Personalized Plan for Leaving the System Behind
Recidiviz builds technology that safely guides people out of the criminal justice system, giving corrections staff instant access to case information that once took hours to find. That gives them more time to dedicate to human work that helps people leave the system behind.
Our funded project is estimated to provide 439X ROI, driving increased annual incomes of $9,090 for 10,400 people.
Connecting Workers to Better Jobs, No Degree Required
SkillUp Coalition links workers skilled through alternative routes to vetted training programs and high-paying jobs — giving people without four-year degrees a clear, navigable path to career transitions that would otherwise feel out of reach.
Our funded project is estimated to provide 138X ROI, driving increased annual incomes of $10,873 for 1,233 people.
Strengthening Recycling Centers to Uplift Informal Workers
Trófica partners with recycling centers in Colombia to strengthen operations, formalize businesses and create stable livelihoods for the waste pickers who depend on them. That turns invisible, informal labor into dignified, sustainable work.
Our funded project is estimated to provide 173X ROI, driving increased annual incomes of $16,020 for 77 people.
Building New Pathways Into the Trades for Women
West Virginia Women Work expands pathways into skilled trades for women and underserved workers across the state, helping remove financial barriers and providing hands-on training that moves people from unstable employment to family-sustaining careers in construction and infrastructure.
Our funded project is estimated to provide 173X ROI, driving increased annual incomes of $16,020.0 for 77 people.
