Our
Innovative
Approach

“With an ambitious target of generating at least $100 in lifetime earnings for every $1 invested, we support innovations that deliver life-changing outcomes. True impact goes beyond numbers, and we recognize that every number on a page and every metric we track represents a life changed for the better.”

- Ellie Bertani, President and CEO

We believe that philanthropy’s potential can only be fully realized when outcomes become the ultimate measure of success. We don’t simply set an aspirational North Star — we actively navigate toward it, guided and held accountable by data and results.

Our North Star is clear, uncompromising and intentionally bold. We aim to generate at least $100 in lifetime earnings for every $1 we invest.

Scaling Advanced Technologies

Leveraging growing relationships with The Ballmer Group and OpenAI through two rounds of our AI for Economic Opportunity Fund, we have accelerated the deployment of AI-driven solutions to open career pathways and economic empowerment for individuals worldwide.

Extending Our Global Reach

Our collaboration with Fundación Santo Domingo (FSD) represents a landmark $1.6 million commitment to advance economic mobility across Colombia, significantly increasing our collective impact through aligned strategic funding. GitLab Foundation is also training the FSD team to employ the foundation’s ROI methodology in-house — strengthening their capacity to drive results.

Uplifting Communities Out of Poverty

In FY25, we teamed up with Robin Hood as a launch partner for the AI Poverty Challenge, an initiative advancing AI-based solutions to drive upward mobility for people living in poverty. In total, $4 million was awarded to organizations focused on education, workforce and financial empowerment.

Investments
in Action

Creating Second Chances for Formerly Incarcerated Individuals

Our funded project is estimated to provide 191x ROI, driving increased annual incomes of $45,000 for 360 individuals.

FreeWorld is offering comprehensive, wraparound support to formerly incarcerated individuals, equipping them with the skills and resources to secure stable careers that significantly exceed the average annual earnings of roughly $15,000 typically earned post-incarceration.

Inclusive Career Pathways and Community for Disabled Professionals

Our funded project is estimated to provide 123x ROI, driving increased annual incomes of $37,200 to 100 individuals.

Making Space exists to break systemic barriers for individuals with disabilities, envisioning a world where they are not only fully included in the workforce but actively celebrated for their contributions. Making Space provides robust career support; strategic partnerships with inclusive employers like Microsoft, Visa, Salesforce, Walmart and Shutterstock; and critical financial literacy training.

Removing Barriers to Food Assistance with Empathy and AI

Our funded project is estimated to have generated 311x ROI, driving increased annual incomes of $1,368 per person for 30,740 individuals.

mRelief is harnessing the power of empathetic technology to simplify SNAP enrollment and dismantle barriers to the process. Through their AI-powered SNAP Assistant, mRelief provides immediate guidance to applicants, now resolving 96% of applicant questions accurately and around-the-clock.

Unlocking Economic Mobility through Personalized Learning

Our funded project is estimated to cost $323 per person to double lifetime earnings, driving increased annual incomes of $5,250 to 128 individuals.

Where you come from shouldn’t dictate where you can go. Yet, too many young people around the world, particularly from Indigenous and immigrant communities, face systemic barriers to quality education and meaningful employment. Origin Learning Fund (O-Lab), based in Colombia, directly addresses these barriers by leveraging innovative technology and providing accessible, culturally-relevant educational solutions.

Leveraging AI to Help Kenyan Farmers Overcome Barriers

Our funded project is estimated to have generated 549x ROI, increasing annual incomes by 8% per person for 155,505 individuals.

In Kenya, smallholder farmers face daily challenges that threaten their livelihoods, from unpredictable climate conditions to limited access to vital agricultural expertise. Digital Green is meeting these challenges head-on through innovative digital solutions tailored to a local context.

Empowering Women to Build a New Future in Kenya

Our funded project is estimated to cost $530 per person to double lifetime earnings, driving increased annual incomes of $960 to 400 individuals.

Kenya’s construction industry is growing at a rapid pace. However, according to the International Development Research Centre, women only make up three percent of the industry’s workforce, in a country where the average daily wage is less than $12. Buildher is working tirelessly to change this statistic, empowering low-income women through specialized training and job placement in skilled construction trades.
